HK Traffic

Nathan road

This is Nathan Rd, Kowloon's main street, at about 10 pm March 2000. Could be Oxford St., couldn't it? Notice any similarities to the UK? The traffic is driving on the correct side of the road, there is a UK style box junction and the bollard is UK spec. There's a double-decker too. This is also one of only 3 places in Asia, that I can think of, where you will see traffic actually obeying the highway code, the others being Singapore and Japan. Also unusual in these three places is the fact that if you are pulled over, the cops are not looking for a bribe, which in other Asian countries is routine. Its totally safe, and if you come from the UK, totally familiar. If you think that the good natured behaviour of the traffic is anything to do with driving on the left - think again. Five minutes in India, in fact the trip from your plane to the terminal in a clapped out old bus, will disabuse you of the quaint notion.
